Understanding Vehicle Safety Ratings

At Genesis of Pottstown, we want people to drive a vehicle in Limerick, PA that they can feel safe in. It's important to understand the two types of safety ratings and the science that goes into them so that you can make informed decisions.

The NHTSA is a federal government organization that uses a star system to rate different cars. They subject a car to both front and side collisions to see how they fare. Then they calculate the probability of a rollover using the cars width and center of gravity. Once these three tests are performed, they give a car a rating on a five-star scale.

The IIHS is a non-profit group that gets its funding from car insurance companies. They subject a vehicle to five different crash test scenarios. Vehicles are then given a rating of Poor, Marginal, Acceptable and Good. Exceptional cars can also receive awards.
